Destination of the Day: Experience the Cormorant Fishing in Yangshuo, China

According to Wikipedia, cormorant fishing, a traditional fishing method in which trained cormorants are used for fishing in rivers, has taken place in Japan and China since about 960 AD.

Controlling the bird is quite easy: the fishermen tie a string loosely around the base of the bird's throat that prevents the cormorant from swallowing big fish.

Once a main method for the fishermen to catch fish, cormorant fishing is used today to serve the tourism industry. However, the birds are kept in good conditions and they can even swallow the smaller fish they catch.

This impressive activity of chinese fishermen can be observed in Yangshuo county. Other outdoor activities to do in the region would be: rock climbing, drifting, bamboo rafting, swimming, water cave exploring, kayaking and cycling.
