The Bohemian Paradise Geopark, also known in the Czech Republic as the Český ráj, was included in the UNESCO Global Geoparks network in 2015 thanks to its extremely valuable natural, geological and landscape features.
The park is famous for its unique sandstone rock formations, which have been shaped by natural erosion over millions of years. These formations include narrow rock towers, steep cliffs and deep gorges, extremely popular among hikers and rock climbers of all levels of experience. One of the most iconic areas within the Geopark is the Prachov Rocks which feature a series of labyrinthine paths and lookouts, providing stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Hiking enthusiasts can walk the Golden Trail of Bohemian Paradise, a long-distance route that passes through the Geopark’s most significant natural and cultural landmarks; or discover the Hruboskalsko Rock Town - a hiking area known for its rock towers and deep gorges. The park has popular cycling routes, including the "Greenway Jizera" trail that follows the Jizera River, offering amazing panoramas and access to small villages.
Originally a volcano, the Kozákov hill is a source of precious stones. The treatment of these gems has been connected with the history of the city of Turnov, which is called ‘the heart of the Bohemian Paradise’. Tourists can discover the Trosky Castle, consisting of two 14th-century ruins located on the summits of two basalt plugs, 15 km from Turnov, and also the Bozkov dolomite caves, which contain the largest underground lake in the Czech Republic. Podtrosecké Valley is located below the ruins of Trosky Castle and is one of the symbols of the Bohemian Paradise.
The Bohemian Paradise UNESCO Geopark can be best discovered with the help of guided tours.
