A trip in the Lake Maggiore region is something of a mix between family-friendly activities in Switzerland and outdoor sports in Northern Italy.
You can start your day with a falconry show in Locarno, Switzerland. Falconeria Locarno is famous for its beautiful shows that present falconry, the ancient art of hunting. It's great entertainment for children and adults, as the birds fly very closely over the audience’s heads. The show includes owls, vultures, a bald eagle, and a Cara-cara.
But if you're more interested in outdoor activities, drive further south to Italy’s Riserva del Sacro Monte di Ghiffa Natural Park in Italy. Here you can enjoy some scenic walks or visit Sacro Monte di Ghiffa itself, an unfinished Baroque-style church situated on a mountain slope and facing the beautiful Lake Maggiore.
Those interested in cycling have plenty of cycle routes around Lombardy, and we’d recommend stopping at some of the smaller villages and take advantage of the lower accommodation prices.
The best time of the year to visit the region of Lake Maggiore is May or June. Check a list of local guided tours available on Lake Maggiore and nearby.
