About Askam-in-Furness Beach

This long, sandy beach is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest for its varied flora and fauna, making it a great location for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The area is a breeding ground for 20% of the country’s natterjack toad population; and rare sandwich terns nest in the slagbanks surrounding the area. A large pier built from slag is a reminder of the iron ore industry that used to thrive here.

Askam is located on the 240 km (150 mi) Cumbrian Coastal Walk, and the beach is also good for fishing and boating.
