Attractions

Many come to see the Heroes’ Cross, known popularly as the Cross on Caraiman, a monument to those who died during World War I. This was erected at the instigation of Queen Maria of Romania between 1926 and 1928, and stands on the slope to the Seaca Valley at an elevation of 2,291 m (~7,516 ft). The cross itself is 28 m (~92 ft) in height with two arms, each stretching 7 m (~23 ft), and is fully illuminated by 300 bulbs each night, and can be seen from miles away. Construction materials were brought up by funicular and by oxen-led carts.

How to Get There

The small mountain town of Busteni (150 km/ 93 mi from Bucharest) is situated just below Caraiman Peak and is a convenient base for short or longer hikes. Most hiking trails are clearly marked.
