Clapham Common covers 220 acres (0.89 km2) situated in south London, split almost equally across the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Wandsworth. It is one of London’s largest open spaces and can trace its origins as a piece of common land back as far as the Domesday Book.
Fauna and Flora
The woodlands, ponds and open grassland areas provide varied habitats for a range of wildlife and plant life. A wildflower meadow and small copses of fruiting shrubs have been planted to encourage birds and insects.
Activities
The Common has four ponds, three formed from old gravel pits. Eagle Pond and Mount Pond are attractions for coarse anglers who come to fish for common, mirror and crucian carp, roach, rudd, tench and bream (permit required). Long Pond is traditionally used for model boating and Cock Pond, a more recent addition, is a paddling pool.
The common also features an all-weather games area, tennis courts, bowling green, a skate park and football pitches. It is used extensively by locals and visitors for cycling, wildlife and bird watching and picnicking.
