About Dartmouth Castle and Sugary Cove Beach

Sugary Cove is a small, remote and therefore quiet shingle and rock beach nestled below wooded cliffs at the mouth of the River Dart on Devon’s south coast. Dartmouth Castle is just 100 m from, and overlooks, the beach.

The water quality has been tested and found to be good. No equipment hire is available but surfing, canoeing and other water sports are permitted here.

There is a grassy picnicking area a very short distance from the beach, along the access path. This route involves descending 70 steep rock steps and so disabled access is restricted. It’s worth being aware that high tide completely covers the beach.
