About Grafham Water

Grafham Water is a manmade reservoir in the county of Cambridgeshire, UK. The reservoir was created to provide drinking water to the local areas. A large valley was filled with water and an earth and concrete dam built to keep the water in place. The lake covers an area of 6.28 km2 (1,550 acres) and has a circumference of approximately 10 miles (16 km).

Grafham Water is set within beautiful rural countryside. Visitors flock to Grafham Water to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the landscape and take part in activities such as cycling, hiking and water sports. Since the reservoir was created it has become an extremely important wildlife habitat and is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The Grafham Water Nature Reserve protects a range of land and water environments with diverse flora and fauna. There is also a protected bird sanctuary within the reserve's boundaries.
