Haystacks fell stands at the south-eastern end of the Buttermere Valley at an elevation of 597 m (1,959 ft) and with a prominence of around 92 m (302 ft). Not only was it listed by Wainwright, it was also the location where he chose to have his ashes scattered after his death, near the shores of Innominate Tarn close to the fell’s summit. This and its own unique characteristics have made it one of the most popular fells in the area. The summit rests on a short, craggy spine which runs at right angles to the ridge. There are spectacular views of Great Gable, Ennerdale Water and High Crag; Crummock Water and Buttermere are also visible.
