About Lake Bolsena

About Lake Bolsena

Lake Bolsena (Lago di Bolsena in Italian) is located in the foothills of Tuscany in Italy. It lies in the crater of a dormant volcano and its formation began 370,000 years ago with the collapse of a caldera. This also created the two islands in the southern part of the lake, Martana and Bisentina, which are both now privately owned. The lake has a surface area of 113.5 km2 (43.8 sq mi) and it is 151 m (~495 ft) deep at its maximum depth.

Activities

Eight small towns are located on the shores of the lake, each with its own stretch of beach for summer swimming. Some also hire out boats. Visitors can swim and take guided boat excursions on the lake, sail, surf, kayak, fish and scuba dive. Alongside the lake there are hiking trails, a jeep and a horse tour, and nearby are thermal baths and archery lessons, and mountain biking. There are also a number of museums in the area and plenty of campsites around the lake.
