Owned by Anglian Water, Rutland Water is a drinking water reservoir and one of Europe’s largest man-made lakes, with a surface area of 10.86 km2 (4.19 mi2). Created in the 1970s, it has since been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and a Ramsar Wetland. Hugely popular with bird-watchers, who come to view the 20,000 waterfowl that flock there, the lake’s other activities include cycling or walking round the 40 km (25 mi) circular trail, water sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, wind surfing and fishing. There are also children’s play areas and an outdoor adventure centre with rock climbing facilities.
