Owned by Anglian Water, Rutland Water is a drinking water reservoir and one of Europe’s largest man-made lakes, with a surface area of 10.86 km2 (4.19 mi2). Created in the 1970s, it has since been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a European Special Protection Area and a Ramsar Wetland. Hugely popular with bird-watchers, who come to view the 20,000 waterfowl that flock there, the lake’s other activities include cycling or walking round the 40 km (25 mi) circular trail; water sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing and wind surfing; and fishing. There are also children’s play areas and an outdoor adventure centre with rock climbing facilities.
