Saklıkent Gorge is one of the deepest and longest canyons in Türkiye, located in Muğla Province, approximately 50 km from the coastal town of Fethiye. Formed over thousands of years by the erosive force of the Karaçay River, the gorge stretches for around 18 km (11 miles) and reaches depths of up to 300 metres (980 feet). The cool waters flowing through the canyon provide a refreshing escape during the hot Mediterranean summer, making it one of the region's most popular natural attractions.
The gorge and its surrounding landscape support a variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna. Pine forests, plane trees, oleanders and wild herbs thrive along the canyon walls and riverbanks, while the clear river provides habitat for freshwater fish, frogs and aquatic invertebrates. Bird species such as swifts, kingfishers and birds of prey can often be seen around the cliffs, and reptiles including lizards and turtles are commonly encountered in the warmer months.
Walking through the canyon is the main attraction, with visitors wading through the shallow, icy river beneath towering limestone cliffs. During periods of lower water levels, adventurous hikers can explore several kilometres into the gorge, passing waterfalls, narrow passages and smooth rock formations. For those seeking more excitement, guided canyoning and river trekking excursions are available.
The river is also a popular destination for rafting and tubing in designated sections, while the surrounding mountains and forests offer opportunities for hiking, photography and wildlife observation. Several riverside cafés and restaurants built on wooden platforms above the water provide places to relax and enjoy traditional Turkish cuisine after exploring the gorge.
Saklıkent Gorge is easily reached by road from Fethiye (approximately 45–60 minutes), Kaş (around 1 hour) and Dalyan. Visitors can travel by private car, organised tour or seasonal local minibus (dolmuş) services operating from Fethiye during the tourist season. Parking, visitor facilities, restaurants and walking paths are available at the entrance, while a suspended boardwalk provides access to the beginning of the gorge.
