This beach was created by the construction of sea defences to prevent flooding and runs from Southend Pier to Thorpe Bay. It is a shingle beach with many of the traditional British seaside amusements nearby, including Southend Pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world at 2.1 km (1.34 mi). Swimming and fishing from the pier (by day permit) are also popular. The beach has been awarded the Quality Coast Award and is Marine Conservation Society Recommended, with excellent water quality. Pleasure boat trips, allowing visitors to view the beautiful coastline from the water, are also available.
