It lies adjacent to the Swanpool Nature Reserve, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, which features over 100 bird species and the microscopic Trembling Sea Mat, a type of bryozoa found only here in the UK. The beach is the scene for swimming, surfing, canoeing and kayaking, body boarding, surf skiing and dinghy sailing. Fishing is also popular. The beach is Marine Conservation Society Recommended and lies on the South West Coast Path.
