The sand and shingle beach is around 1.6 km (1 mi) from Whitstable. It is backed by a promenade and grassy slopes, making it suitable for games and picnicking. Sailing and swimming are popular here and the beach has won a Blue Flag Award, as well as being Marine Conservation Society Recommended. A natural shingle causeway known as The Street enables you to walk out to sea at low tide. A path along the beach forms part of the Saxon Shore Way, a walking route than traces the eastern coastline as it would have been in Roman times.
