This crescent shaped bay nearly 8 km (5 mi) in length lies within an Area of Outstanding Beauty on the Solway coast. Backed by dunes, there are exceptional views across the Solway Firth to the southern mountains of Scotland and the Lake District fells.
Said to be one of the windiest places in Britain, the beach is much prized by wind surfers when the tide’s in and kite surfers when it’s out. Strong currents make it less suitable for beginners, though. If you tire of walking on the sand and shingle beach, the Cumbrian Coastal Way passes through the village. Horse riding and sea fishing are also available.
