Another of the Lake District’s smaller and lesser known lakes, Loweswater is just 1.8 km (1.2 mi) long and 0.55 km (0.34 mi) wide. The only boats permitted on the water are those hired on site. A popular and pretty lakeside walk runs round the lake’s perimeter, and on the south side, it’s worth diverting through Holme Wood, a small forest, to Holme Force, a stunning but little visited waterfall. Fishing is available here in season by permit for roach, pike and brown trout.
