About Ashton Canal

The Ashton Canal runs for 9.7 km (6 mi) from Ashton-under-Lyne to Ducie St Junction in central Manchester. There are 18 locks along its length, many of which are now listed buildings. It links the Huddersfield Narrow and Peak Forest Canals with the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals and forms part of the Cheshire Ring, the South Pennine Ring and the Outer Pennine Ring.

Ashton Canal is used for leisure boating and the towpath, which has been improved, provides accessibility for walkers and cyclists, and is suitable for wheelchair users. It’s also a popular stretch of water for fishing.
