The Caldon Canal is 27 km (17 mi) long with 17 locks, three operational lift-bridges and one tunnel. It runs from the Trent and Mersey Canal at Etruria Junction in Stoke on Trent and terminates at the junction with the Uttoxeter Canal at Froghall. There is one branch (the Leek Branch), which runs from Hazelhurst Junction to the outskirts of Leek. This is 4.8 km (3 mi) long with no locks and one tunnel. The route runs through Stoke’s historic potteries district and through rural Staffordshire and is much used by pleasure craft. Walking and cycling along the towpath are also popular.
