Hard Knott stands at the head of Eskdale at an elevation of 549 m (1,801 ft) and with a prominence of 154 m (505 ft). Its parent peak is Scafell Pike and it is listed as a Marilyn as well as being a Wainwright. At the summit, there is a knoll bearing a cairn at the highest point. Two subsidiary tops are named Yew Bank to the north and Border End to the south. Hard Knott’s best feature is the impressive view of the Scafells to the north with Harter Fell to the south. The Border End top is noted for its impressive view of Eskdale. Most direct ascents begin from the car parking space at Hardknott Pass, although an alternative is to begin in Eskdale and climb Harter Fell and Hard Knott on the same circuit.
