About Hardraw Force

Hardraw Force is a waterfall situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, England, near the village of Hardraw in Wensleydale. Located on Hardraw Beck (a tributary of the River Ure) in Hardraw Scar, it is known for being the largest unbroken waterfall in England, with a single drop of approximately 100 ft (30 m). (In reality, Gaping Gill on the western flank of Ingleborough has an unbroken fall of more than 300 ft (91 m)).

Hardraw Force is on private land and, to access it, visitors typically enter through the Green Dragon Inn, a historic pub in Hardraw. An admission fee has to be paid to access the viewing area. The waterfall is particularly impressive after periods of heavy rainfall when the water flow is more robust, usually in winter. Bear in mind that swimming here is forbidden as you are not allowed to access the base of the falls.

The Pennine Way long distance footpath passes close by the fall. Hardraw Scar, the gorge where Hardraw Force is located, is a natural amphitheatre with an amazing acoustic and, in September, is the site of an annual brass-band contest popular among players and audience alike.

The path around the waterfall is level and gravelled and is suitable for wheelchair access with care (the upper trails are more tricky to navigate and are not accessible by pushchair or wheelchair). The location is pet friendly, dogs have to be kept on leads. Parking can be done at Green Dragon Car Park, where the visitor centre is also located.
