Heaton Park is the largest of Manchester's parks and the largest municipal park in Europe, at around 600 acres (242.8 ha). It is now owned by Manchester City Council and managed by a local leisure trust. As well as plenty of open space for running and walking, there is a boating lake where rowing boats are for hire in summer. The lake is populated by ornamental birds and wildfowl, and renowned for its carp fishing. An 18-hole municipal golf course, animal farm, children's play areas and woodlands provide plenty of facilities for leisure and pastimes. Heaton Park Tramway operates through the efforts of its volunteers.
