The loch has a southwest to northeast orientation. The north side of the lake is situated on a shallow climbing slope while the southern end has an opening, containing the outflow to the River Carron and several small lochans (small lakes).
Loch Doughaill is surrounded by several mountains - Creag Dhubh Mhor and Sgurr na Feartaig at the east side and Fuar Tholl at the west.
