About Rutter Force

Rutter Force is a waterfall located in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England, near the village of Appleby-in-Westmorland. It is a horseshoe-shaped waterfall formed by Hoff Beck as it flows over a series of rocky steps, in the beautiful Eden Valley. It is recommended to visit Rutter Force after a lot of rainfall and the best view is from a narrow footbridge across the stream.

The waterfall played an important part in bringing electricity to the area. A water turbine was installed at Rutter Force in 1928, using the 30 ft (9.1 m) fall of water over the rocks to produce electric power for Great Asby village until 1952. Next to the waterfall is a picturesque old mill, first mentioned in 1579 and used to grind corn. The waterwheel has been restored and the mill has been converted into holiday accommodation.

The parking space at Rutter Force is limited but the location is dog friendly. When there is enough water on the pool below many go for wild swimming.
