Both South Sands and North Sands at Salcombe are Marine Conservation Society Recommended beaches, with fine sand. North Sands is a level beach sheltered between two headlands. It's good for swimming, but is totally submerged at high tide. There is a handy picnicking area behind the beach and various walks in the area including a stretch of the South West Coast Path and Salcombe Town Trail. South Sands is somewhat livelier, with equipment hire and tuition for water sports, including canoeing, catamaran sailing, wind surfing and dinghy sailing. Scuba diving to view the numerous shipwrecks in the area is also popular.
