About Scale Force

About Scale Force

Scale Force is the highest waterfall in the Lake District, UK. The waterfall consists of three drops; the highest of which is 170 ft (52 m) while the others fall approximately 20 ft (6 m) each.

Scale Force is nestled in a deep gorge on the northern side of Red Pike, a mountain in the High Stile range. The tree lined gorge creates a striking frame for the glistening waterfall. On seeing the fall, English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge eloquently described it. "Scale Force, the white downfall of which glimmered through the trees that hang before it like the bushy hair over a madman's eyes" he wrote.

Scale Force is approximately 2.5 miles from the Buttermere village car park and is within easy walking distance from several nearby trails.
