About Shropshire Union Canal

About Shropshire Union Canal

The main line of the Shropshire Union Canal runs from Autherley Junction near Wolverhampton to the Manchester Ship Canal at Ellesmere Port and is 107 km (66.5 mi) long with 47 locks.

There are two branches – the Middlewich Branch (16.1 km / 10 mi with three locks) runs from Barbridge Junction to the Trent and Mersey Canal at Middlewich.

The River Dee Branch runs from the main line at Chester to the tidal River Dee (0.4 km / 0.25mi, three locks). It is part of the Four Counties Canal Ring and is a popular touring destination for holiday makers. Much of the route is through quiet, rural countryside and there are long stretches where towns are many kilometres apart.
