About South Shields Beach

This sandy beach, backed by dunes and cliffs, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the large number of sea birds it attracts. As well as bird watching, there are a host of other activities on offer: swimming, sailing, surfing, jet skiing, wind surfing, canoeing and kayaking, kite surfing and fishing all take place here. There is a water sports centre for equipment hire and tuition. The area is also well-developed with many visitor activities and amusements, including a funfair. The beach holds Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards and is Marine Conservation Society Recommended, with plenty of coastal walks for hikers.
