Southsea's beach is largely shingle, although low tide does reveal some patchy sand. Otherwise, the shore slopes steeply down into the sea. The beach stretches from Old Portsmouth to Eastney and is popular with swimmers and for sea fishing. There are two piers, South Parade Pier and Clarence Pier, both featuring traditional seaside amusements. The Blue Reef Aquarium also is situated on the sea front. Nearby Canoe Lake is an area of marsh and open water topped up by sea water, in which crab fishing is popular with children.
