This is part of the Benacre National Nature Reserve, which covers 393ha. Until November 2011, it held freshwater and was separated from sea by a narrow beach but a high tidal surge engulfed the beach and as a result it is now saline. Much of the reserve is private property and straying from the public rights of way is by permission only. It is estimated that over 100 breeding bird species use the site, including marsh harrier, bearded reedling, water rail and a variety of ducks. There is a public hide on Benacre Road, but viewing from the beach beyond is closer.
