The Bridgwater and Taunton Canal connects these two locations over a distance of 21.7 km (13.5 mi). There are seven locks along the route. It was originally intended to link the Bristol and English Channels, but plans failed and now this canal is isolated from the rest of England’s canal system. However, it is worth a visit in its own right: it winds its way round the base of the Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is rich in wildlife.
The towpath is well-maintained for walkers and cyclists and there are various features en route such as the Somerset Space Walk, a sculpture trail model of the solar system, and Maunsel Lock where public boat trips are available.
