A sand and shingle beach, Charlestown Beach is located near St Austell. Charlestown’s harbour is historic and has often appeared in film and TV programmes. The Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre educates visitors on coastal shipwrecks and the history of the area.
The water quality is excellent and the beach is Marine Conservation Society Recommended. Diving and snorkelling, sailing and swimming are popular here. Access to the east side of the beach is via steps from the harbour while from the west, there is a slipway down onto the sand.
The South West Coast Path runs on the clifftops alongside the beach, giving pleasing views of St Austell Bay, and can be used to walk to neighbouring beaches Porthpean and Duporth.
