About Codale Tarn

Codale Tarn is a small, shallow lake, less than 2 m (6 ft) deep, in the Central Fells area of the Lake District. It lies at an elevation of 468 m (1,536 ft), high up on Grasmere Common, around 6 km (4 mi) from Grasmere and to the west of Easedale Tarn. Its outflow, a small beck, runs from Codale into Easedale Tarn and onwards Grasmere. The quiet tarn provides good views of Helvellyn on a clear day and contains small brown trout: fishing permits are not required for this stretch of water. It is easily accessible with a short detour from the footpath which runs from Easedale Tarn to Sergeant Man.
