This park is on the site of a former colliery, transforming the colliery waste heap into nearly 200 hectares of country park and making it one of Sunderland’s largest open spaces. It is in the shadow of the Penshaw Memorial, a huge replica of an Athenian Temple built on Penshaw Hill. There are impressive views across the north east and a vast network of walks and cycle pathways available, including an art and sculpture trail. Over 100 bird species have been spotted in the park, which also plays host to many local, regional and national events.
