The vast expanse of open sand at low tide at Meols is attractive for horse riding, sand boarding, power kiting and sand buggying. The 6.5 km (4 mi) North Wirral Coastal Park lies adjacent to the beach and the area attracts bird watchers, particularly in winter, for the range of coastal birds. The beach is Marine Conservation Society Recommended, with excellent water quality. Views of Southport, Formby and Blackpool can be seen from the shore, and even the southern mountains of the Lake District when the weather is particularly clear.
