In a previous life, the site of Pugneys Country Park was an open cast mine, sand and gravel quarry. It became a country park in 1985. There are two lakes: the larger one is dedicated to water sports (not motorised) such as canoeing, wind surfing and sailing. Tuition is available. There is also a 2.6km (1.6mi) path running around the lake suitable for walking and running. The smaller lake is a nature reserve. There are two bird hides, enabling you to watch the wildlife which includes a vast flock of up to 100 swans. A miniature railway runs round a section of the larger lake at weekends and on bank holidays.
