Roker Beach is also known as Whitburn South. The wide stretch of sandy beach is backed by rugged cliffs and framed at the north and south ends by rocks. It is the busier of Sunderland's two main beaches, being closest to the city centre and can get crowded during peak season. A large water sports centre provides facilities and equipment hire for kayaking and canoeing, jet skiing, sailing and wind surfing. Swimming and rock pooling are also popular. The beach won a Seaside Award in 2013 and had also been awarded a Blue Flag. The C2C long distance cycle path ends at the beach.
