Scammonden Reservoir is located to the west of Huddersfield and adjacent to the M62 motorway (of which its dam forms a part). A 6.5 km (4 mi) walk circuits the reservoir through woodland and rough pasture with an optional detour past the quieter Dean Head Reservoir nearby for impressive views back down the valley. It’s worth noting that the unsurfaced paths can be wet and muddy after rain. There is also a marked orienteering course (details available to download from the site owners, Yorkshire Water). Scammonden Water Sailing Club holds exclusive rights to the water, so activities are restricted to dinghy cruising or racing. There is a picnic area at the far end, opposite the dam.
