Sidmouth Town Beach stretches around 1.6 km (1 mi) and is mainly pebbled, although some patches of sand are revealed at low tide. The beach is fairly sheltered and features excellent rock pools at the western end, while the eastern end is shadowed by the cliffs that loom above. An esplanade backs the length of the beach. Because it tends to have a little more sand than neighbouring Jacob’s Ladder Beach, it is more popular with families. Visitors also come for swimming, sailing, surfing, wind surfing and jet skiing. There is zoning in place for motorised water sports. The beach lies on the South West Coast Path.
