Southwold has one of Suffolk's most popular beaches; it's also one of the cleanest with Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards and being Marine Conservation Society Recommended. It has an historic pier dating back to 1899, from which fishing is popular. Southwold is almost surrounded by water, with the North Sea to the east, River Blyth and the harbour to the south west and Buss Creek to the north, so there is plenty of scope for water sports, including swimming, wind surfing, water skiing and jet skiing; as well as sea and river boat trips for visitors less keen on getting wet.
