Formerly a boggy marshland , a wetland that is ruled by herbaceous rather than woody plant species, the loch was formed in 1856 as part of Prince Albert's development plans for the surface enclosig the palace. This lake has been employed as a boating loch, but now is home to a solid population of ducks, geese and swans.
