Cullercoats has a small, crescent-shaped beach which offers sheltered bathing due to its waters being shielded from currents by a small stone pier at either end. There are cliffs to the rear, which are interesting from a geological perspective, and are punctuated by small caves. Activities from the beach include boating, sailing, jet-skiing, wind surfing and kayaking. To the south of the bay, there's a launching area for local fishing boats and pleasure crafts. In the area, there's also a working Victorian lifeboat station and a marine laboratory. Cullercoats has earned a Blue Flag award.
