Tynemouth King Edwards Bay has a small beach - just 300 m (984 ft) of sand - and is backed by steep grassy banks and cliffs. Activities from the beach include diving and snorkelling, surfing and swimming. Fishing is also good here. The beach lies at the foot of Tynemouth Priory and Castle and has won Seaside and Blue Flag Awards. Despite its urban setting, it has a surprisingly rural feel and is popular with families. The beach is sometimes also known as Short Sands, to distinguish it from the neighbouring Long Sands Beach.
