The largest of the Midlands' natural lakes, Aqualate Mere is a National Nature Reserve and a designated RAMSAR site set within the grounds of Aqualate Hall, a country house and private estate with a landscaped deer park. Despite being very shallow, no more than 1 m (3.3 ft) deep, it supports diverse fish (pike and bream) and bird populations in open water, reed bed and rush pasture habitats. A large number of birds overwinter here, including many wildfowl and waders such as the Eurasian Curlew and Common Snipe. There is a heronry and the site is also important for its varied botanical and invertebrate communities.
