One of the most distinctive and photographed mountains in Scotland, Buachaille Etive Mor stands at the head of Glen Etive and has an elevation of 1,021 m (3,350 ft), with a prominence of 533 m (1,749 ft). Its iconic pyramidal shape is seen to good effect when approaching Glen Coe on the A82 road. Buachaille Etive Mor consists of a ridge stretching to around 8 km (5 mi) in length, on which there are four distinct summits. Of these, Stob Dearg is the highest with Stob na Broige also qualifying as a Munro (956 m/ 3,136 ft) The two others, Stob Dearg (1,022 m / 3,352 ft) and Stob Coire Altruim (941 m / 3,087 ft) have Munro top status.

Stob Dearg’s craggy, steep north-eastern face provides the mountain with its distinctive appearance, and this is the most direct route usually favoured by climbers and scramblers. Walkers are more likely to favour the path, which is rocky and leads steeply up the Coire na Tulaich, reaching the summit ridge a short distance west of Stob Dearg.
