The Chesterfield Canal runs from the River Trent at West Stockwith in Nottinghamshire to Chesterfield in Derbyshire, a distance of 73.3 km (45.5 mi) long with 65 locks over its course. At present, the section from West Stockwith to the eastern end of the Norwood Tunnel is navigable – this stretch is 50.9 km (31.6 mi) long and has 46 locks. Work is continuing on restoration of the remaining length. The towpath, known as the Cuckoo Way, is fully walkable from beginning to end and passes through quiet rural landscapes. It’s also reputed to have some of the best canal fishing in England.
