Once a highly popular resort, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea suffered from serious erosion in the past, but has now been revived somewhat by the introduction of a new sea defence system backed by a promenade and sand shipped in from elsewhere in the country. Bird watchers gather on the promenade in spring and autumn to watch sea birds on the North Sea migratory passage. Newbiggin South is the larger beach, with sand and rock. Newbiggin North is a rocky shore, but low tide reveals sand. The cliffs here are rich in fossils, but care must be taken as they are prone to crumbling. Both beaches are Marine Conservation Society Recommended.
