This Marine Conservation Society Recommended beach is also part of a Special Area of Conservation: the sand dunes are a protected area for wildlife and contain a large number of mosses and lichen species, as well as rare plants. The entire dune system is the most extensive in Cornwall, with a maximum sand depth in places of 48 m (157 ft). The South West Coast Path also runs through the dunes. The beach itself together with Perran Sands and Perranporth Beach (Village End) form nearly 5 km (~3 mi) of golden sands. A magnet for surfers, other activities include swimming, kayaking and canoeing, diving and snorkelling and fishing. Zoning is in place for water sports.
