Pitsford Water reservoir has a surface area of 2.85 mi2 (7.4 km2). The northern end is designated as a nature reserve, but the waters are also used for leisure activities, including fishing for brown trout, rainbow trout and pike and sailing. An 11 km (7 mi) track along the edge of the water is available around the main section of the reservoir for walking or cycling. The site is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest for its flora and fauna, including the uncommon Essex skipper butterfly and the birdlife that over-winters and breeds here, which attracts many birdwatchers.
